Intermediate Dog Class
Prerequisite: Your dog must have satisfactorily completed a “Puppy” (LINK) and/or “Beginner” (LINK) Class (within the last year) for dogs of any age.
This is a 1-hour weekly course that meets for 5 weeks, designed to teach you to maintain control over your dog in more distracting situations and follow commands outside of his/her basic home environment. All behavioral instruction with you and your dog (no lecture content).
Behaviors taught
- loose leash walking/leave it
- Stay – with distractions
- Wait – denies permission to move forward unless “released” (good for getting into/out of the car, going up/down stairs, etc.)
- Heel – more controlled walking, working not only on understanding “heel position,” but keeping and maintaining the dog’s constant attention while walking (good for parking lots and crossing busy intersections)
- Swing / Around – returning to heel position
- Settle – a “turn off” switch for your dog
- Place/Park It – going to their mat and remaining in place: good for when you want to eat dinner or have company coming
- Stand
- Stand and Stay
